ABC Music & Me is a research-based language and early literacy program built around music. ABC Music & Me helps develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s most-loved rituals: music and storytime. Children ages 2-4 will giggle and move their way through early learning preparation. They will develop essential social skills through group activity and learn the joy and importance of learning with their peers. ABC Music & Me supports the early childhood standards and requirements for “high quality programs” as defined by the National Institute for Early Education. Parents are encouraged to supplement class times by using the materials provided as per each 1 month unit.

The Preschool Library Class is a time for the students to have a variety of books read to them and to cultivate a love for books and reading.  Activities such as the Pledge of Allegiance, “The Weather Bear,” coordinated coloring sheets and occasional crafts enhance the enjoyment of the class.

In this course students will explore basic sculpture techinques and tools. They will work in a variety of materials such as clay, paper, wire, wood, stone, and mixed media. In clay we will create tiles, pinch pots, slab projects, coil projects, and sculptures. I will also highlight famous sculptors throughout the year such as Michelangelo and Henry Moore. We will have a different unit each month such as paper sculpture, wire, Clay, bookmaking, paper mache', wood, stone, and mixed media. We will make sketches to plan out our idea, watch demos, and then create their own final projects. There is no text or homework for this class. I also like to start each class out with prayer and relate each project back to the most creative artist God!

This class is geared toward students who have completed beginning strings or by pre-arranged audition.  The goal of this class will be to continue with the basics of music study, string instrument playing and ensemble work.  This will be a multi-level class, with parts and groups geared to meet the level of the students. There are no age restrictions. Students are expected to provide their instrument, and necessary accessories (bows, rosin, shoulder sponge, music stand and book).  They will given assigned pieces and parts which they will be expected to practice at home and come to class prepared to play.  Parents and students will need to set aside a daily consistent time for practicing. Ensemble presentations will be given at the Christmas and end-of-year concerts if a majority of the class will be present.

This year we will be exploring Ancient History!  We will discover how writing began, who made the first library.  Do you know how they build the Great Wall of China? And that you can see it from space?  We will discover how the Chinese Emperor, Shi Huangdi, booby trapped his tomb and guarded it with life size clay warriors.  We will learn about the people and places in the Bible and what was happening in the world around them! Come and join us for crafts, games and more as we learn all about The Ancients!

This intermediate level piano course will build on students’ knowledge of note reading and rhythm as they learn about intervals, chord structures, key signatures, and music history, and improve their technique and artistry. The small class size will enable personal instruction in a fun group atmosphere. Students will learn how to play songs they love and will gain confidence in performing as they play for each other from week to week. Each student will have their own keyboard and headphones to use during class. Students are expected to have access to a piano or keyboard to practice outside of class throughout the week.

Enjoy the fun of exercise as we learn and condition our bodies. This class will help all students learn athletic skills, good sportsmanship, self-confidence and team work. We will be learning sports specific skills from sports such as basketball, soccer, baseball, football and more. Exercise form and additional hand-eye/foot-eye coordination skills will be practiced for a broader spectrum of learning. Careful attention will be given to effort, attitude and sportsmanship. Performance tests will be taken periodically as a measure of improvement to encourage each student in his or her progress.

The students will learn Latin language and grammar through translation of Bible verses, stories  and songs.  Each student will receive a Latin dictionary and will be taught how to use it.  Students should be able to use an English dictionary. Each student needs to provide a 1 inch binder

Prerequisite:            Spanish II or studied Spanish before and have a good grasp of basic vocabulary and verbs.

 

This class is designed to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and to expand knowledge of the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. We will develop listening comprehension skills through interactive dialogues, stories and exercises and will and increase vocabulary in varying situations. The students will have the benefit of having a native speaking teacher that sets the right context for the learning and the proper use of verbal and non-verbal communication.  There will be homework assignments most weeks.  Homework:  approximately 50 minutes per week.

Prerequisite:            A basic understanding of grammar is recommended.

uring the course of the year, this writing class will incorporate several writing styles and techniques.  The class will include:  several poetry forms, improving and expanding sentences and paragraphs by employing various style techniques, writing narratives, various outlining styles, basic research papers (including note taking techniques), and more.  There will be a writing homework assignment each week.  Homework:  approximately 2-3 hours per week..  It is recommended that students work with a quality grammar program while taking this class. Students outside specified grade levels MUST have prior teacher permission to register.  This level is a great option for 6th grade students who are not ready for the more rigorous 6th-8th grade class.

The student will help create, write and put on one or two plays.The student will comprehend and demonstrate a knowledge of basic stage directions.The student will learn more about themselves and others through interactive roleplaying games focused on social and theater skills.We will write a story ourselves to perform as a play, maybe even with singing.  The play will be fun and it will be videoed for family and friends!

A solid understanding of grammar is useful for improving writing skills and learning a foreign language.  Shurley Grammar is an extremely effective program for the acquisition and retention of grammar concepts.  Chants and jingles are used to learn the parts of speech, their function and how to locate them in a sentence.  Punctuation, capitalization, editing, synonyms/antonyms will also be taught.  Grammar is often dry and boring, but this program adds fun to the memorization and application of the concepts.  Parental attendance is encouraged, especially for the first 3 - 4 weeks of class.  Students can expect 15 - 30 minutes of daily homework.

Like to dissect?  Every week will be a lab of either observing a living organism or dissecting a preserved specimen.  We will start with unicellular organisms and work our way up to complex organisms and their parts including invertebrates and vertebrates.  This is a ‘hands on’ weekly lab class and we will cover a lot of “biology basics”.    Students will be required during the week to watch video clips and prepare for the next lab and will need internet access.  Lab write ups and drawings will be due weekly.  Students need to be willing to spend a couple hours per week for research and lab preparation.  For 6th grade and up.  You can take this for credit class for (some extra work required) or audit/fun.

From acorns to zooplankton, we’ll study all living things. Emphasis is placed on the flora and fauna of Washington State with an entertaining twist - memorable melodies that help us reinforce and remember the life science. Lecture demonstrations by the instructor are followed by “show and tell” presentations by the students. Homework consists of reading a chapter, learning a song (Don’t worry! You don’t have to sing in class.), completing a worksheet, and preparing the next week’s presentation. Field trips are suggested for further enrichment. Students need to purchase the texts, Lyrical Life Science, Volumes 1 & 2, by Doug and Dorry Eldon (ISBN 09646367-00 & -27). Purchase of workbook and song tape/CD is optional.

Have you ever wanted to know more about computer graphics and effects?  This class will begin with 2D graphics and an introduction to image manipulation via layers.  We will then move into 3D modeling and texture mapping via a 3D modeling package called Nendo.  In addition, we will cover basic 2D animation and web integration via Expression Blend and Silverlight.  This class is primarily targeted at grades 7-12 with previous experience in basic computing.   Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis.  Class computer time will be used to re-enforce previous reading or homework assignments.  Laptop running Windows Vista or better is required.

Have you ever wanted to know more about how your computer and those cool games work?  This class will introduce you to the basic building blocks used in making a computer do what it does.  We will use Visual Basic Express to explore beginning concepts in computer programming and design.  An understanding of the concept of variables would be helpful.   Expect 1-3 hours homework each week with class time used for demonstrations and introduction of new concepts.  Students must be comfortable with the basic operation of a computer.  A laptop running Windows and Visual Basic Express is required.

A geology course combined with apologetics:  The goal of the class will be to acquire a deeper understanding of Genesis and how it explains the geology of our earth.  Using the book of Genesis as our foundation, we will explore the earth’s geology including the study of global flood dynamics and rocks, minerals and fossils.  A special emphasis will be placed on how fossils support the Biblical view of earth history.  Outside work will include textbook assignments and reports.  There will be occasional quizzes and a final multiple choice exam.  In addition, the class will debate the instructor at the end of the year on the subject matter in the course.  Please note: this subject will be taught from a young earth perspective.

The emphasis in this Preschool Music class is fun!  It is a great opportunity for preschool children to learn new songs that not only entertain but teach them about Jesus.  These songs are led by Pastor Jim playing the guitar, and puppets, rhythm instruments, and games, coloring and crafts are used to help them to enjoy learning

Let’s play in Spanish! During this fun preschool class your toddler will be introduced to the Spanish language through specific activities designed for his age. Using songs, movement, stories and games your child will start discovering a new language. We will play, sing and think in Spanish.  The goal is to allow your child to be totally submerged in the language and get used to the sounds, words and their intonation. It is not too early to start. Studies show that when a 2nd language is introduced early in life, the children will learn it faster and have a better chance to speak it with the appropriate pronunciation.

Let’s Play!  We will be running, spinning, jumping, kicking, marching, skipping, balancing and more as we play games that help develop your child’s gross motor skills and use up a lot of energy.  While they are having a lot of fun playing they will also learn about encouraging one another, teamwork, sportsmanship and following directions.  Each class will open with a group warm up and Biblical truth/concept that we will talk about as they participate in activities.  Please have your child wear non-marking tennis shoes and bring a water bottle with their name on it to each class.

Come join us in reading fantastic books while “lap booking.”  Each book that we read will be discussed, and our related projects will involve different curricular areas.  The books lend themselves to geography, science, history, writing, grammar, and even math projects.  At the completion of each book study, your child will have a “lap book” with all of our projects displayed.  Books will come alive!  There will be very light homework occasionally.

There is a method to the madness of the English language!  By learning the 70 phonograms of our language both written and orally, students will embark on a journey of discovery that will enhance their ability to read and spell!  With fun activities, games, and songs, we will learn to apply rules that will allow your child to win the battle of decoding and spelling any word they encounter.  This class is a great way for parents to reap the many benefits the Spalding Method  provides without having to go through the training yourself.  Homework will include practicing the weeks phonograms both written and orally, and practicing the weekly spelling words.  Great for students who are just beginning to learn sounds, as well as those who have begun the reading process.  A great multi-sensory approach to language arts that could be your LA instruction for the year

In this class students will use a free online resource in conjunction with the classes to learn how to move the pieces correctly, record their games, develop a good opening, learn how to set up basic checkmates, avoid stalemates, and other basic strategies. Students are responsible for bringing a board and pieces to class, and will be assigned 10-20 minutes of online homework per week. Most of the class period will be spent playing chess.

Romans 1:20 tells us God has revealed His invisible attributes, His eternal power and His divine nature to mankind through His creation of the world.  Using the creation week as our outline, we’ll embark on an exciting adventure to learn more about God through science.  With demonstrations, hands-on exploration and application of His word, we’ll discover ways to use this information to glorify Him and concurrently lay the foundation for future science study.  Although no homework is required, all students are encouraged to keep and review a science notebook.  Activities for further enrichment outside of class time will be suggested.

We designed this class by listening to both kids AND parents.  Kids want to have fun with their peers, imitate pop stars, and look as good as the guys & gals on TV.  Parents want their kids to move in a respectful manner, but have fun nonetheless.  The funk and fun of jazz fused with stylized hip-hop street dance moves make up the core of the skills learned in this challenging class.  We break the steps down slowly, putting them together in dances to age-appropriate music, teaching good body-image and respect all the while. Your kids will love it - let's go have some fun!

Take a look into God's greatest creation:  the human body.  Learn the inner workings of our heart, lungs, bones, muscles, skin, brain, and much more. Learn how to keep our bodies healthy and what happens when things don't go as planned and the body breaks down.  Learn some basic first aid.   Hands on activities will enhance learning as we look at models of bones, muscles, the heart and other organs.  We will dissect several animal organs, play games, do experiments and watch object lessons to help reinforce learning.   Light homework reviewing vocabulary words and information learned in class plus one short report during the school year.  Students need to be able to sit and take vocabulary notes during teaching time. Depending on class size, available parents may be asked to assist in class during dissection labs.

This class will be packed with a variety of activities enjoyable to a range of ages. While utilizing their God-given ingenuity and creativity, students will also learn the important skill of working as a team. This class is designed to get your kids excited about the wonderful world that God made. No homework required.

Class Title:             Sign Language 2 – The Other Foreign Language

Class Text:              Flashcards are recommended.  The student can make their own, or they can be purchased through me (they are still homemade) but prices vary depending on the week (as the number of words change each week

Prerequisite:            Completion of the Sign Language course in 2010-2011 or with teacher approval. This will be a continuation of that class so only those who took the first class can continue with this one.               

 

There is a whole section of the population that does not speak an audible language.  In the United States alone, there are 2 to 4 people out of every 1,000 who are deaf.  This “foreign” language class will cover how to “speak” with the deaf.  It is a beautiful language that will not tie your tongue (but maybe your fingers) and makes singing absolutely beautiful and graceful.  Come join us as we learn to “speak” another language.

 

This is a continuation class from the Sign Language class taught in 2010-2011.  Only students who took the class at that time can continue with this one.  If you have questions, please contact me.

Class Title:             Make a movie

Prerequisite:            5th grade may be accepted – speak to instructor.

 

The student will create, write and film an original movie. The student will comprehend and demonstrate knowledge of basic film terminology and techniques. The student will learn more about themselves and others by working in groups that force cooperation and team work. A finished product will be available at the end of the year.  The first day of class we will work to set up our goals, including if we want to do single productions or one large one or several medium ones.  The students will make the final decisions and we may do a combination of all three. I am basing this class off the Introductory Film Making class I took in College at University of Colorado – a renowned film school.  We will watch clips from movies in class – including scenes from some PG-13 movies (picked carefully).

Class Title:             Beyond “Google It” Jr. High

Everyone loves the Internet, but contrary to popular opinion, "googling it" and the use of Wikipedia do not equal good academic research.  Studies show that high school graduates are sorely lacking in necessary research skills.  Our students are also faced with the difficulty of understanding ethical and safe behaviors online.  This course is intended to help the junior high student understand how to use modern technology safely, ethically and effectively through a project based class.  Included is a methodical approach to properly completing a research project.  Students will also be coached in effective methods of presenting their work.  Students will need a laptop (okay to share), Microsoft Office or equivalent, access to the Internet, and a public library card.  Expect 1-3 hours homework per week.

Class Title:             Biblical Geology

Grades:                    6 - 8

Class Material:        The Geology Book – John Morris, The Young Earth – John Morris, The Genesis Flood – Tas Walker, and a rock and fossil kit.  A materials fee of $65.00 for each student covers all texts and the kit.

Prerequisite:            None.            

 

Using the Bible as our foundation, we will explore how the Bible explains such things as the different kinds of rocks, the origin of volcanoes, mountains and oceans, the abundance of fossils, the origin and disappearance of the dinosaurs, the “Ice Age” and radiometric dating.  There will be some outside reading and report assignments and a multiple choice exam at the end of the course.  Please note that the material will be taught from a young earth perspective.

Join us as we learn to better survive emergency situations that occur at home and at play and how we may avoid them. Our text "Emergency Response" will cover many topics that include: CPR, water restoration and bodily harm. All participants will gain valuable knowledge to assist in overcoming the largest threats and tips for tackling fear. Wilderness survival special projects will include: building shelters, making a light weight stove and creating survival fire starting cubes. Also, students will understand the concepts of building a fire and learn what is best to bring on excursions into the wild to better equip them for life threatening situations. This hands-on introduction to science is specifically designed for inquisitive 1st through 3rd graders who want to experiment and learn about various aspects of God's creation. Your child will step into a science laboratory and conduct experiments with color, sound, food, living organisms, and other elements of our world. Using the scientific method, students will learn to ask questions, hypothesize, collect data, and make and record observations. Students will keep a science journal and learn to work cooperatively and independently. Reading comprehension skills will also be emphasized. Teacher will provide the materials for the experiments. Parents are asked to provide a "lab coat" (an oversized shirt) to protect clothes from our sometimes messy experiments.

As we continue on the Writing Road to Reading, students will continue their mastery of the 70 phonograms of the English language.  We will go further into the spelling list, and will focus on mastering the more difficult phonograms not mastered in the first Writing Road to Reading class.  We will begin using our spelling words to make sentences and paragraphs, and learn the basics of grammar and sentence structure.  We will also read excerpts from quality literature together and focus on author’s purpose and comprehension techniques.  This will continue the multi-sensory approach to Language Arts on a more advanced level than the first class.  Homework will include practicing phonograms both written and orally, practicing spelling words, and completing homework assignments given.  If students were not in the first Writing Road to Reading class, parents should contact me to get the phonogram cards and work on mastering the first 45 before the class begins in September.

Junior Geographers will have fun discovering America as we travel through the United States, singing patriotic songs and collecting souvenirs as we go.  We’ll begin with our national capital and symbols, and then visit several states each week.  Colorful maps and fact pages help us learn each state’s capital, major cities, attractions, bird, tree, flower, flag and motto.  Each student will also have the opportunity to give an oral report on a state of their choosing.  There is no homework outside of class required other than preparation for this oral report and several optional activities.  A year-end Open House will be held for parents to see and hear all we’ve learned!

Would you like your child to have an advantage when he/she takes Algebra?  Hands-On Equations is a program designed to introduce younger children to concepts usually not introduced until Algebra.  The program uses manipulatives to teach students to solve equations and verbal problems.  Once concepts are mastered, students transition to the traditional “paper and pencil” approach to solving equations.   This method strengthens the student’s understanding of algebraic concepts, problem solving and mental math skills, all while having fun. Students must have a firm understanding of adding, subtracting and basic multiplying/dividing skills.  Most work will be done during class.  Homework will be up to 45 minutes per week depending on student’s pace.

The student will learn many famous Bible stories from the New Testament. The student will create a quilt to fit his/her bed as a portfolio of their work from the year. This class is designed to be FUN!  Everyone will grow and learn as they discuss what kind of lives people lived when the Bible was written.  We will color and draw and in general have a wonderful time while constructing our quilts.  Last year we did Old Testament, but this year we will focus on the New Testament.  Many questions come up during these classes and it is a great non-threatening way to discuss current social concerns as well as create a beautiful master piece.

Want to do science projects but don’t know where to start?  We will first learn the scientific method and how it relates to our lives and problem solving.  Students will then learn how to research a topic, conduct an experiment, and present their project.  Students will learn presentation skills, graphing, report writing, and how to research a topic.  This will require minimal parent participation at home to help set up and monitor student’s projects and there is some weekly homework.  Most of the projects are teacher directed and all materials will be supplied.  Projects include making ice cream, measuring lung capacity, making flubber to working with seeds, meal worms and more! When students are ready, they can direct their own project.  We will also try to enter some competitions for those who are interested.

Students can expect also to learn to draw many different subjects such as portraits, landscapes, animals and architecture to name a few. Romans 1:20 tells us God has revealed His invisible attributes, His eternal power and His divine nature to mankind through His creation of the world.  Using the creation week as our outline, we’ll embark on an exciting adventure to learn more about God through science.  With demonstrations, hands-on exploration and application of His word, we’ll discover ways to use this information to glorify Him and concurrently lay the foundation for future science study.  Although no homework is required, all students are encouraged to keep and review a science notebook.  Activities for further enrichment outside of class time will be suggested.

There is a whole section of the population that does not speak an audible language.  In the United States alone, there are 2 to 4 people out of every 1,000 who are deaf.  This “foreign” language class will cover how to “speak” with the deaf.  It is a beautiful language that will not tie your tongue (but maybe your fingers) and makes singing absolutely beautiful and graceful.  Come join us as we learn to “speak” another language.

This continuation of the Beginning Robotics class will go into more detail with how to build and program robots. The course goal is for students to be able to consistently build their own robots. This is accomplished by building up from smaller working components, both in hardware and software. For example, starting with little test programs to understand how a sensor relates to its environment. Or building an isolated manipulator to see if and how it will work before building a robot around it. Depending on the time and student abilities we will also study multitasking, Bluetooth communications, and subsumption architecture.

Programming will be done with a (free) text-based language (BricxCC’s NXC).

We will focus on understanding the purpose and functions of democracy by paying attention to the Constitution and biblical basis for government. Learn what the government does, why it is the way it is and why it does what it does.  Debate will be woven in throughout the year with a focus on the different issues we talk about in Government.  This class has an option for grading and one HS Credit.   Homework will be assigned and should take five days a week about 1-2 hours per day.  Parents will be asked to provide additional reading materials (list will be given in class).  Students will write three essays and present one oral report and participate in debate.  This is a High School level class.
