Let’s Play! We will be running, spinning, jumping, kicking, marching, skipping, balancing and more as we play games that help develop your child’s gross motor skills and use up a lot of energy. While they are having a lot of fun playing they will also learn about encouraging one another, teamwork, sportsmanship and following directions. Each class will open with a group warm up and Biblical truth/concept that we will talk about as they participate in activities. Please have your child wear non-marking tennis shoes and bring a water bottle with their name on it to each class.

Come join us in reading fantastic books while “lapbooking.” Each book that we read will be discussed, and our related projects will involve different curricular areas. The books lend themselves to geography, science, history, writing, grammar, and even math projects. At the completion of each book study, your child will have a “lapbook” with all of our projects displayed. Books will come alive! There will be very light homework occasionally.

Using a variety of games and activities, students will learn the 70 basic ways to spell all 45 English sounds. In addition, they will begin to learn the 28 spelling rules. Students learn to write and say the symbols representing the sounds of speech. Next, with teacher guided dictation, they learn to sound out and write spelling words. Logical thinking will be incorporated as students learn to mark spelling concepts in words. SWR integrates language arts including cursive penmanship, grammar, composition, vocabulary and spelling. Homework per week is ½-1 hour. This class is for the reader as well as the non-reader.

Romans 1:20 tells us God has revealed His invisible attributes, His eternal power and His divine nature to mankind through His creation of the world. Using the creation week as our outline, we’ll embark on an exciting adventure to learn more about God through science. With demonstrations, hands-on exploration and application of His word, we’ll discover ways to use this information to glorify Him and concurrently lay the foundation for future science study. Although no homework is required, all students are encouraged to keep and review a science notebook. Activities for further enrichment outside of class time will be suggested.

(All new writing topics and poems.) Join us as we capture our unique experiences while creating treasured keepsakes you will enjoy for years to come! On oil pastel drawing days, class begins with figure drawing warm-ups, where we take turns modeling and drawing. A second drawing by topic is then completed, exploring student imaginations and teaching drawing, color, and compositional skills. Other days we work on our year-long “Book of Months” project, which consists of fine-arts poems, your child’s journal entry or narration, and their colored pencil illustrations, all nicely bound together. Projects include a glazed ceramic tile, matted colored pencil drawings, and painted Christmas, Valentines, and Easter Projects. Hallway art shows, fine-arts examples. Class may be repeated.

This class is geared toward students who have completed beginning strings or by pre-arranged audition. The goal of this class will be to continue with the basics of music study, string instrument playing and ensemble work. This will be a multi-level class, with parts and groups geared to meet the level of the students. There are no age restrictions. They will be given assigned pieces and parts which they will be expected to practice at home and come to class prepared to play. Parents and students will need to set aside a daily consistent time for practicing. Ensemble presentations will be given at the Christmas and end-of-year concerts if a majority of the class will be present.

Prerequisite: A basic understanding of grammar is recommended.
During the course of the year, this writing class will incorporate several writing styles and techniques. The class will include: several poetry forms, improving and expanding sentences and paragraphs by employing various style techniques, writing narratives, various outlining styles, basic research papers (including note taking techniques), and more. There will be a writing homework assignment each week. Homework: approximately 2-3 hours per week.. It is recommended that students work with a quality grammar program while taking this class. Students outside specified grade levels MUST have prior teacher permission to register. This level is a great option for 6th grade students who are not ready for the more rigorous 6th-9th grade class.

Math Olympiad is a problem solving based national competition. This class is offered to introduce important mathematical concepts and to teach major strategies for problem solving. Students will learn to explore fun and exciting new ways to solve multi-step mathematical equations. There will be five monthly contests given from November to March. The scores will be totaled and submitted to the national office. Depending on his/her score, a student may receive a trophy, a handsome embroidered Olympiad patch, a silver or gold pin, or a bronze medallion. Each student receives a Certificate of Participation. This class provides elementary students with an incentive to intensify their study of math. Many students claim that math has become their favorite subject after taking this class.

Have you ever thought about the needlework that your ancestors use to do? Is it a dying art? How about joining a class that will bring back those treasured arts? Come enjoy being with friends and making your own items to keep or to give away. We will learn basics in the art of crocheting and knitting. You will learn the basics on practice yarn and then do at least one large project. There will be outside work to do at home to get projects completed.

This class is designed to develop eight character qualities using questions and discussion focused on God’s Word and Character Booklets. We will study each quality for four weeks. Students receive a 3-ring binder with dividers to build a Character Life Notebook. Each week they get personal study sheets to stimulate daily (15-30 minute) exploration of scripture and practical application. There will be extra emphasis on the character quality of GRATEFULNESS during the year. We will also be focusing on biographies of heroes of the faith. Each student will choose four life stories during the year and will be asked to write a two-page, type-written paper explaining character qualities they saw in each person’s life.

First half of the year we will examine the election process and then focus on understanding the purpose and functions of democracy by paying attention to the Constitution and Biblical basis for government. Learn what the government does, why it is the way it is and why it does what it does. The last half of the year will be dedicated to Debate. This class has an option for grading and two HS Credits (1 for government and 1 for debate.) Homework will be assigned and should take five days a week about 1-2 hours per day. Parents will be asked to provide additional reading materials (list will be given in class). Students will write three essays and present one oral report and participate in debate.

Have you ever wanted to know more about computer graphics and effects? This class will begin with 2D graphics and an introduction to image manipulation via layers. We will then move into 3D modeling and texture mapping via a 3D modeling package called Nendo. In addition, we will cover basic 2D animation and web integration via Expression Blend and Silverlight. This class is primarily targeted at grades 7-12 with previous experience in basic computing. Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis. Class computer time will be used to re-enforce previous reading or homework assignments. Laptop running Windows Vista or better is required.

During the length of the course we will be building vocabulary sets along with everyday expressions, emphasizing pronunciation and cultural elements that will enrich the student’s experience. Who should take this class: young children and students taking Spanish for the first time. What if my child already took this class? Every year I try to change or add to this class. Don't worry if your child can't move yet to Spanish II, remember that consistency and repetition is the key to master a new language.

Junior Geographers will have fun discovering America as we travel through the United States, singing patriotic songs and collecting souvenirs as we go. We’ll begin with our national capital and symbols, and then visit several states each week. Colorful maps and fact pages help us learn each state’s capital, major cities, attractions, bird, tree, flower, flag and motto. Each student will also have the opportunity to give an oral report on a state of their choosing. There is no homework outside of class required other than preparation for this oral report and several optional activities. A year-end Open House will be held for parents to see and hear all we’ve learned!

Prerequisites: None. Character qualities are taught on a two-year rotation – thus different from last year.
Children at the elementary level are at one of the most impressionable times in their lives, thus it is important to instill a good grasp of godly character at this age so it can guide them throughout life. There are eighteen character qualities which are taught using stories from Scripture, nature, and history, while fun songs, crafts, games, and more add to the enjoyment. Each child receives a 3-ring binder and beautifully illustrated trading cards for each quality, complete with character definitions and ways of implementing the qualities. Parents will receive an 8 1/2 x 11 poster, a table topper, and Parent Previews for each character quality to help reinforce the teachings at home. Awards are given for memorization of character definitions and applications.

This class is designed as a beginning writing class for elementary aged students. Within that framework, we will include vocabulary building, listening skills, and thinking skills. Writing activities will include: writing poetry, what makes a sentence, sentence building, using a thesaurus, brainstorming, story journals, book reports (some reading required), simple paragraphs, and more. Listening and thinking skills will include: following directions, vocabulary development, verbal sequencing, verbal classification and more. There will be short homework assignments, which may include take home worksheets, journal activities, and short writing assignments. Approximate homework time: 15-20 minutes per day.

Take a look into God's greatest creation: the human body. Learn the inner workings of our heart, lungs, bones, muscles, skin, brain, and much more. Learn how to keep our bodies healthy and what happens when things don't go as planned and the body breaks down. Learn some basic first aid. Hands on activities will enhance learning as we look at models of bones, muscles, the heart and other organs. We will dissect several animal organs, play games, do experiments and watch object lessons to help reinforce learning. Light homework reviewing vocabulary words and information learned in class plus one short report during the school year. Students need to be able to sit and take vocabulary notes during teaching time. Depending on class size, available parents may be asked to assist in class during dissection labs.

It is my goal to glorify the Lord through teaching the skills that will equip young people to care for themselves and others, in preparing for and conquering everyday challenges, along with doing whatever God has in store.
Class will cover: organization; time management; prioritizing; decision making using prayer, pro and con lists, weighing consequences and alternatives; people skills including effective communication, resolving conflict; money management, bank accounts, budgeting; basic etiquette, notes of gratitude, phone and computer use, good manners; becoming marketing and advertising savvy; self-protection including personal boundaries and awareness of ones surroundings; goal setting; and attitude.
This class is divided into units. Students will be assigned weekly reading and/or assignments of no more than 15-30 minutes and a research/class project.

An Art Projects class! We will go from one project to the next: Ceramic Tile glazing, Acrylic Painting on wooden objects, Clay Sculpting, Mosaic Art, Drawing, Additive Sculpture, and others. This is something new for middle grade students and available parents who are interested in nurturing their inner neglected artist! Class is run in a similar manner as my younger level class. We learn about Design, Color, Drawing, and Painting, while having a great time together, exploring our artistic ideas. If desired, all new simple writing assignments can be done as well, and bound into an illustrated keepsake book. Middle level students and parents alike, come have fun with us, and create artwork that will surprise you AND your families! Some homework is to be expected.

Exploring Space and Earth we will look into astronomy, oceanography, geology, speleology, weather and fossils. There will be little homework other than reading the books (estimate 1-3 hours/week outside of class). Lots of in-class active learning, demonstrations, and class discussions. No formal tests – though there may be occasional “learning checks”. No grades – just fun learning – and above all, learning about God’s goodness in this wondrously created universe.
The Master Books Press Science series “Wonders of Creation” are beautifully illustrated books that will make a beautiful addition to any library. Prior to class starting, the instructor will offer a group purchase at discount to anyone interested (even to those not in this class if they wish to take advantage of the discount price).

The goal of this class is to teach the students the basics of playing the guitar and to enable them to play a number of songs. Everyone loves the Internet, but contrary to popular opinion, "googling it" does not equal adequate academic research! Colleges and businesses are finding today's graduates sorely lacking in necessary research skills. Our students are also faced with the difficulty of understanding ethical and safe behaviors online. This course is intended to help the high school student understand how to use modern technology safely, ethically and effectively through project based work. Included is a methodical approach to properly completing a research paper - an essential skill for college. Students will need access to Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) and the Internet at home as well as a public library card. Expect between 3-5 hours homework per week.

The goal of this class is to encourage a love for music as well as a love for the Lord. Music & Me is a research-based language and early literacy program built around music. ABC Music & Me helps develop pre-literacy and language skills through a child’s most-loved rituals: music and storytime. Children ages 2-4 will giggle and move their way through early learning preparation. ABC Music & Me supports the early childhood standards and requirements for “high quality programs” as defined by the National Institute for Early Education. Who discovered chocolate? What happened to the Giant Fovor of the Mighty Blows? Why did the Ottoman Turks drag their war ships across dry land? Come join us as we discover the answer to these questions and so much more. Each class time will include reading, coloring, map work, and hands on projects related to the chapter. We will go through Story of the World Volume 2 in its entirety using the Activity Book for Volume 2 as the curriculum guide. Expect 15-30 minutes of homework a week.

Discovering how words are put together and learning their origins is fun! This class gives children the tools to determine the pronunciation, spelling and meaning of new words they encounter. We will focus on structural analysis of words by studying syllabication, pronunciation, spelling rules, prefixes, suffixes, dictionary skills, and Greek and Latin roots. Each student receives a 3-ring binder. My curriculum includes reference pages to help study at home and a weekly five page homework packet (15 minutes daily). They will write a set of Latin and Greek cards to help them understand the roots and how they are used as building blocks of English words. 'Scholar Dollars', 'Class Participation Coupons', and 'Character Coupons' given to spend in a 'store' every 5-6 weeks provide encouragement!

This class is geared toward the very basics of string playing. Care of the instrument, form, open string and early first position note patterns as well as note and rhythm reading and ensemble playing. There are no age restrictions. Students are expected to provide their instrument, and necessary accessories (bows, rosin, shoulder sponge, music stand and book). Students will be given weekly assignments, which they will be expected to practice at home. Parents and students will need to set aside a daily consistent time for practicing. Ensemble presentations will be given at the Christmas and end-of-year concerts if a majority of the class will be present.

Would you like your child to have an advantage when he/she takes Algebra l?
This class is designed to introduce younger children to concepts usually not introduced until Algebra I. The program uses manipulatives so that students have a stronger understanding of algebraic concepts. The program transitions to a pictorial representation of equations, and then to a traditional "paper and pencil" solving of equations. This method strengthens student's understanding, problem solving and mental math skills, all while having fun!
New this year, students will be learning critical thinking skills and problem solving skills using materials from The Critical Thinking Co. and Dale Seymour Co. These skills are invaluable for further mathematical success. Student must have a firm understanding of adding, subtracting and basic multiplying/dividing skills. Most work will be done during class. Homework is between 15-45 minutes/week, depending on the student's pace.

Using a variety of games and activities, students will learn the 70 basic ways to spell all 45 English sounds. In addition, they will begin to learn the 28 spelling rules. Students learn to write and say the symbols representing the sounds of speech. Next, with teacher guided dictation, they learn to sound out and write spelling words. Logical thinking will be incorporated as students learn to mark spelling concepts in words. SWR integrates language arts including cursive penmanship, grammar, composition, vocabulary and spelling. Greek and Latin roots will be introduced to enhance reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary. Parental involvement is welcomed.

This class is designed to build listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills and to expand knowledge of the culture of the Spanish-speaking world. We will develop listening comprehension skills through interactive dialogues, stories and exercises and will and increase vocabulary in varying situations. The students will have the benefit of having a native speaking teacher that sets the right context for the learning and the proper use of verbal and non-verbal communication. There will be homework assignments most weeks. Homework: approximately 50 minutes per week.

Beginning with Pearl Harbor (and world events leading to the attack), we'll study in chronological order the battles, historical figures, strategy and weapons of World War II. We'll also look at several great military battles outside that time period. Though no weekly homework is assigned, students are expected to give one or two presentations to the class, based on the military topic of their choice, and to contribute to the round-table discussions. Let’s explore the physical ocean, the mysterious life it contains – and get high school credit in biology with labs (required graded homework and lab work). Combining oceanography, geology, biology and chemistry in a marine science environment, the material covered is extensive and moves somewhat fast. It is best if the student has had some introductory biology (a 7th grade biology class, or even “regular” high school biology). Motivated students who are eager to learn should be able to handle the class even without prior biology. Time outside class requires 4-6 hours/week. In class we will review reading, discuss current environmental issues, do microscopy, dissect some marine creatures, and focus on giving God the glory for His amazing creation.

Homer, Caedmon, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Austin, O’Henry, Saki - familiar names but have we been formally introduced to their worlds and works? This course will bring us face to face with the works of some of the world’s greatest wordsmiths (including the famous author Anonymous!) We’ll explore the great themes of literature and delve into the search for Truth which all people in all ages have sought. We’ll become familiar with the elements of good literature and the structure of story and poetry but will avoid the tedium that too often accompanies “literature study”. This course may be taken in two tracks – either as enrichment or as a graded credited HS course which involves quizzes, tests and assigned (short!) written responses to literature. We will do some oral, in-class reading and also view film presentations of a Shakespearean play.

Through creative art and craft projects, students will experiment with shapes, color, texture, and various mediums. We will look at God’s creativity and designs as seen in nature, animals, and people. In the process, we will learn about famous artists in history like Monet, Michelangelo, Matisse, O’Keefe, as well as some artists still living today like Joni Erickson, and Thomas Kinkade, to name few. Through these artists we will be inspired to try their techniques and tap into the artistic side that God has put into your children. This is an opportunity for your son or daughter to learn the game of chess. We'll study rules and basic strategy the first couple weeks. At home, students will study using a free on-line resource. During class we will set-up boards and apply what we know. Each student is asked to either bring their own chessboard, or contribute to a fund that will provide enough regulation chessboards for the club, and any tournaments we hold. Good sportsmanship and personal improvement will be the main focus; however, as the kids play, we will have them record wins, losses and ties so we can match up players of similar skill levels for the following week.

We designed this class by listening to both kids AND parents. Kids want to have fun with their peers, imitate pop stars, and look as good as the guys & gals on TV. Parents want their kids to move in a respectful manner, but have fun nonetheless. The funk and fun of jazz fused with stylized hip-hop street dance moves make up the core of the skills learned in this challenging class. We break the steps down slowly, putting them together in dances to age-appropriate music, teaching good body-image and respect all the while. Your kids will love it - let's go have some fun!

We will use hand and sewing machine quilting to design quilt squares that reflect our own perception of favorite Bible stories. I will provide the machines. There will not be sewing every week, but there will be enough sewing to be FUN! The student will learn the traditional Bible stories, as presented from a Christian perspective, to include: Noah’s ark, Moses, Joseph, Joshua, and Creation among others. The student will be able to retell the stories in their own words. The student will make a quilt and be able to explain what their quilt signifies. The student will learn basic sewing skills.

Using a spiral approach, we will travel the trails of exploration through the various fields of science, providing every student with an opportunity to discover something that whets his/her appetite for more learning. Discover atoms, animals, optics, wave mechanics, the intricacies of the human body with all its marvelous systems, the earth and space, and more!! Each unit covered within a 1-2 week time frame, keeping the pace fast and student interest fresh with new discoveries. All materials provided by the instructor. Lots of hands-on, minds-on activities performed in class. Some projects may be completed at home for further enjoyment with the family. There is a whole section of the population that does not speak an audible language. In the United States alone, there are 2 to 4 people out of every 1,000 who are deaf. This “foreign” language class will cover how to “speak” with the deaf. It is a beautiful language that will not tie your tongue (but maybe your fingers) and makes singing absolutely beautiful and graceful. Come join us as we learn to “speak” another language.

We will be exploring events in world history from A.D. 1850-present. The class time will be structured around discussion, time lining, projects and more. The student will be writing short narrations to summarize chapters as well as keeping a time line of birth and death dates of historical figures, dates for major wars and conflicts, scientific discoveries and more. At the end of the year they will have a binder full of their own history of the world in their words! Homework will include reading and completing a simple outline. The student will be asked to report on one event and one person throughout the year and share it with the class.

This class will teach students to build and program robots using the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT set. Students will build a number of different robots in class, learning how to get their robots to drive around, avoid or find objects in their environment, and otherwise interact with their environment. Several friendly robot competitions will take place in class. Math and physics appropriate to the topics covered will be addressed in class.
Homework will consist of improving the robots we've started in class, and after the students have some experience, improving the programs as well. At the end of the year students will build a robot of their choice, and do a 3-5 minute presentation.

During the course of the year, this writing class will incorporate several writing styles and techniques. The class will include: several poetry forms, improving and expanding sentences and paragraphs by employing various style techniques, narrative writing, various outlining styles, basic research papers (including note taking techniques), some essay writing, and more. There will be a writing homework assignment each week. The 6th-9th grade class has higher expectations and moves at a faster pace than the same class offered for grades 4th-6th. Students registering outside grade levels MUST have prior teacher permission. The 6th-9th grade students will receive grade reports twice during the year. Homework: approximately 3-4 hours per week.. Begin your adventure into high school science with this overview study of the world God has created. “Science of the Physical Creation” presents a high school level of introduction to meteorology, oceanography, geology, chemistry and physics. The class is primarily descriptive with few pre-algebra problems with concepts reinforced by in-class and at-home lab work. Time outside class should be about 2-4 hours/week.
